My Screw Up, My Big Lesson on Small Business Mentoring

03/18/2011

Have you ever had those experiences that when you are in them, you know you’re probably screwing it up royally, but just keep going with what you are doing?

Well, a couple of months ago, I had one of those experiences.

I was setting up my shopping cart for my website.  While I was setting it up, it was a little confusing to me.  I thought I’d set up one account and be done.

Well, then, I’d get an email about setting up my ‘Gateway.’  “Huh,” I’d think, “I thought I did that, but I guess not, so I’ll do the steps this email is telling me to do.”

Then another email would come….

“Now, set up your merchant account…”

“O.K. I’m not sure what the difference is between a ‘Gateway’ and ‘Merchant Account is,’ but being a girl who’s always done what she’s told, I went with it.

But, I had that feeling….”I feel like I should ask someone for help, but I am not sure who could help me, so…”

Now comes….THE LESSON.

This isn't me, but looked like me last week!

Last week, I got a phone call from my bank that holds my business account.  I had a few overdraft fees.

‘What?!?!  But I don’t have anything in there right now?”  Duh, right?

Here’s what happened.

In the confusion of setting up my shopping cart, I somehow set up for the fees to be automatically drafted instead of being charged to my business card.

Woops!  Wasn’t prepared for that.

The whole issue cost me hundreds of dollars of fees from my bank and the companies who were trying to draft the fees in the first place.

After a half of a day spent on the phone with the companies giving the whole sob story of my utter confusion, I was able to get SOME of the fees reversed.

When I sat back, unable to do anymore, I went back to the gut feeling I had in setting up the whole damn thing that I should just hire someone to do it.

Here’s the thing.  What I do my best at keeping in mind, is when I have a gut feeling, it’s a power bigger than me steering me in the direction I am supposed to go.  I ignored that power thinking I was smarter and it reared it’s big, ‘ole head to show me that it was bigger than me.

I have to listen to the gut, the feeling, the power, whatever it is I want to call it that day.

I had that same feeling starting a business of my own.

I had come from a Network Marketing background where everything was set up for me.

Starting a new business of my own, I knew I needed to be a marketer, networker, sales person, accountant, strategic planner, all while remaining a wife, mother, housekeeper, etc.

I listened to my gut after writing down all the stuff I needed to do and getting fully overwhelmed when it said, ‘You need some guidance, girl!’

I found the guidance I needed and made me feel much more sincere and confident in what I was doing.  It made me feel grounded.  Hell, it made me feel like a SANE person!

This is a TRUE story.

The lesson I want to teach those of you who are either thinking of starting a business to escape the hell of corporate America, or for those who have started a business but are just grinding away in a state of overwhelm, that you need to get help.

Not because you’re dumb, or incompetent, but because you ARE smart!

We all have ‘dumb’ moments like I had setting up the shopping cart, but I learned greatly the power in listening to myself.

Mentors Are Good!

I am not going to be good at all aspects of building my business.  For those where I lack confidence or knowledge, I now rely on mentors.

Yes, I must invest in them, but what I learn and what I take away is invaluable!

Just like this little bird, he is following his mentor.  His mentor has already flown.  His mentor has already fallen, scuffed his little webbed feet, but got back up and learned how to soar.

Mentors, in the long run, will save time, money, frustration, lack of confidence, and SO much more. Small business mentoring is CRITICAL to success in starting a business from home!

Most new entrepreneurs will fail because they will try to “figure it out” themselves.

It’s the truth.

Find a mentor specializing in small business mentoring, invest, and soar with the rest who have already DONE what you are striving to do.

Just like Kobe Bryant.  He had skill, he had the desire, he had the dream.  He found a mentor(s) who helped guide his way and he has built a successful career doing what he loves.

Do you think he grateful to have had the guidance?

I know I am, so just sit back and ‘feel’ into yourself.  Do you have a gut feeling on anything in your life?

Good or bad, it’s a message.  Recognize it and act on it.  It’s there for a reason.

I am always learning in this journey called life, however, I have learned the strategic steps of starting a business from home and how to get started on the right foot.

I know what’s important, what’s not, where to spend my time and what doesn’t serve me.  I would like to be the person who teaches YOU that as your small business mentor.

How true it is! Anyone who’s in business has had the chance to screw up. Thanks for sharing one of yours with us and reminding us that we can move on, learn from it, and then help others not make the same mistake (there will be plenty of other mistakes they can make).
